The main motivation behind this work was to try and capture the feeling and realism behind that instant when an object impacts with a liquid surface. The main challenge here was capturing the shape of the event, making it necessary to observe how light distorts when travelling through water and round shapes. It's fairly simple to extrapolate that high contrast, and quick shifts between black and white, are the key factors in making this piece work. This work was created as a study in water splashes, because after painting the Kingfisher portrait, I felt it necessary to refine and improve my painting of water, hence the simple composition. Furthermore, I know of few instances where water has been painted in this state, and felt there should be more of it.
