The original this picture is based upon was created with my keenness for capturing natural phenomena at their most alive and action-packed point. This particular instant is the rarely seen moment when a kingfisher strikes to catch its "daily dish." I think I was always going to paint a kingfisher in oils, as they are a very bright and vivid subject matter and I like to work on things like that.
